The approach

Unhurried. Specific. Built around the songs you love.

Lessons are one-to-one, so every session is shaped around where you are — not a generic syllabus.

  1. 01

    A conversation first

We start with how you like to learn, what you already play, and the music you actually want to hear coming out of the instrument.

  2. 02

    Fundamentals, in real songs

Technique is taught in context: clean chords, secure timing, and a left hand that feels natural — using pieces you care about.

  3. 03

    Progress you can hear

Each week has a small, clear aim. You leave knowing what to practise, and why it will sound different next time.

Who it’s for

If you want to play well — not just get through a book.

  • Absolute beginners

First chords, a steady strum, and a song you can play for someone else within the first few weeks.

  • Coming back to it

You used to play. The rust is normal. We rebuild the foundations without pretending you’re twelve again.

  • Young players

Patient, structured lessons for children and teenagers — short enough to stay focused, musical enough to stay keen.

  • Going further

Improvisation, fingerstyle, electric tone, and the details that separate “can play” from “sounds like a guitarist”.

About Paul McHugh

Calm teaching. High standards. No wasted minutes.

Paul McHugh is a private guitar teacher covering Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire. Lessons are built on three things: a secure technique, songs the student actually wants to play, and progress that is slow enough to stick.

The room is unhurried. You will be shown exactly what to do with your hands, given a reason for it, and sent home with a practise plan that fits a real week — not a fantasy one.

Acoustic & electric

The same clarity on either instrument.

Acoustic

Open chords, fingerstyle, rhythm that sits in the song, and a right hand you can trust.

Electric

Clean technique first, then tone, lead lines, and the vocabulary of the music you want to play.

From students

Quiet progress, week after week.

  • I finally understand what my hands are supposed to do. No jargon, no rushing — just clear teaching and songs I actually wanted to play.

  • My daughter looks forward to Thursdays. Paul is patient without being soft, and she can play things she recognises, which changed everything.

  • I came back after fifteen years away. The rust came off faster than I expected, because every minute was doing something useful.
